THE CENTRE
OF CULTURE
A distinctive dominant feature of the Mírové náměstí (Square of Peace) belongs to the most remarkable representatives of traditionalism of the 50´s in the 20th century, the so-called SORELA, not only in the Czech Republic but worldwide. This centre of culture was built within one year only, between 1954–1955 according to the project of architects Jaroslav Krauz and Josef Sedláček. Political prisoners from nearby mines of Jáchymov took part in the building too. The oblong two-storey building is divided into one central part and two side wings. On the top of the central part you can see the statue made by sculptor Jaroslav Šlezinger, who was also a political prisoner. There is a theatre hall, cinema, halls for social meetings, exhibition rooms, a café and rooms for afternoon club activities. The centre of culture is decorated with many paintings. The entrances to the social halls show preserved original glass paintings depicting mining symbols of Jáchymov mines. In its times this centre ranked among the most modern ones in the country, with its turning stage and other modern equipment.
