CHURCH
OF ST. JAMES
The oldest preserved sight on the territory of the town of Ostrov. Its history dates back to 1223. Originally a parish church, later a cemetery church, it was built in late Romanesque style, which is evidenced with its entrance portal. The oblong nave of the church made of quarry masonry is connected to a square presbytery. The roof made of chopped shingles holds an octagonal open belfry with a two armed cross. First considerable reconstruction since its establishment was made in 1606. In the beginning of the 20th century the church was determined for demolition. Fortunately, it was not carried out and a complete reconstruction was made in 1912. Since the beginning of the 21st century the church is a property of the town of Ostrov and partial renovations are under way. It is currently used as the place of final farewell for ceremonies. This church has outstanding architectural and historical value and it brings about the history of our town.
