CHURCH
OF ST. MICHAEL
The church dates back to the final quarter of the 14th century. The newly built church replaced the function of parish cemetery church of St. James the Greater. This era can be seen on the tympanum of the entrance portal and the cross vaults in what is today a sacristy. When the town was massively destroyed by fire in 1567, the original Gothic church was completely burnt. Its Renaissance reconstruction was made using the sacral architecture of Saxon style. After this renovation the church was newly consecrated to St. Archangel Michael. Between the years 1607 and 1609 the church was completely reconstructed and its current upper octagonal part of the tower was built. The Baroque shape the church carries nowadays was given to it between 1716 and 1756 during the reign of Baden margraves. Visitors of the interior can see Renaissance tombstones. One of the most valuable ones is that of the Šlik dynasty from 1521. The furniture is purely Baroque, mostly from the 18th century. The church holds the remains of St. Ludmila, St. Václav and St. Jan of Nepomuk and a drop of blood from St. John Paul II. Modern reconstruction of the church was carried out between the years 1989 and 1991. In 1995 the patronage of the church was enlarged with consecration to Virgin Mary Faithful, which turned the church into a site of pilgrimage.
