THE SUMMER
RESIDENCE
The Summer residence was built between 1673 and 1683 for its owner at that time – Julius František, duke of Saxon-Lauenburg, who owned the manor of Ostrov. The building was created on a place of a wooden house, which was later changed into its nowadays shape by the famous Prague builder Abraham Leuthner. The disposition of the building as well as its fresco and stucco decorations disclose Italian influence. The fresco paintings were created in the 90s of the 17th century by Italian artists, who worked at the court at that time (architect and painter Domenico Egidio Rossi, painters Lazaro Maria Sanguinetti and Paolo Manni). Nowadays the premises are used by the Gallery of art of Karlovy Vary. Its short-term expositions present mainly works of Czech artists. A permanent exposition can also be seen, displaying a unique collection of china from the High school of decorative arts in Karlovy Vary. The objects on display are products of significant porcelain factories of the region but they also present pieces of world production.
