MONASTERIAL COMPOUND
A complex of Baroque sacral buildings, so-called “Sacred district” was arising since 1644, when the foundation of the burial chapel of St. Anne was laid. This is a family tomb of Saxon-Lauenburg dukes and margraves of Baden. The convention was built later – Piary comprehensive school (1666–1673) with church of Annunciation of Virgin Mary. After that the Chapel of St. Florian was built (1692–1693) and the dominant feature the Einsiedeln chapel (1709–1710) – built according to the original design of the Swiss Einsiedeln. In the 50´s of the 20th century, the compound was ruined by the Czechoslovak peoples´ army. The destruction was so extensive, that complete demolition was considered for some time. The place was saved from its ruins by the town of Ostrov and a total investment of 145 million crowns. A true rarity has been created between 2001–2007! The monasterial church is nowadays used as a concert and exhibition hall, the chapel of St. Florian is a reminder of all the violence that had happened in the region of Ostrov. An inseparable part of the Sacred district is the monasterial garden and its popular eco-centre with a miniature ZOO.
